” I have always been fascinated by the lives of other people. They could be pop culture superstars or unsung pioneers along the Oregon Trail. Everyone has a story, and I have been happy to dig for the details and spin the stories to make them accessible and exciting for children.”

For my latest book, Helen Thayer’s Arctic Adventure, I was inspired by a woman who set a goal and then faced down fear, uncertainty, and the wrath of nature to try to reach it (with the help of a trusty dog).

I apply my writing and organizational skills in several arenas. I have written 50 illustrated children’s nonfiction books including three series: “America in the Time of…” (Heinemann Library/Capstone), “Documenting Early America” (Crabtree), and “All About America” (Kingfisher). Other books include Cowboys and Cattle Trails (winner of the Best Book for Children on Texas History) and Bill and Melinda Gates (Heinemann Library/Capstone), National Geographic Kids Ultimate Adventure Atlas of Earth and Ultimate Globetrotting World Atlas

With a background in educational publishing, I write for educational assessment projects as well as textbooks and online programs. I also communicate for organizations on their marketing messages, newsletters, and websites.

As Communications Director at Star Consulting, Inc., I plan events, conferences, and educational seminars for professional associations. My role as co-chair of the 21st Century Children’s Nonfiction Conference beautifully weaves together my strengths and passions. Visit www.21CNFC.com to learn more about the Conference.
